York Autumn Scenes
There has been some beautiful colours this autumn in York and also some clear skies to make viewing the Hunter’s Super-moon and A3 Atlas Comet possible. Maybe because spring was such a damp squib this year, and the preceding winter – not all that wintery, it is nice to get a chance to photograph a season passing without being left disappointed! So here a few of the things I’ve been shooting over the last few weeks. There’s still a decent bit of colour left so still some Autumn shots to be made over the next week or so.
First up is the afore-mentioned Hunters Supermoon rising behind York Minster. The full moon rising or setting behind York `Minster is a shot I’ve wanted to take for a while. It requires quite a few things to come together – firstly a full moon ( and there are only 12 or maybe 13 of these a year), a horizon clear of clouds and a time of year where the position of the full moon is behind the Minster from a suitable viewing point with a telephoto lens. These are all hard elements to combine so it makes for a very happy photographer when they all come together. Even better when it’s for a super moon!
Next up a couple of drone shots taken in South Bank along the river on a lovely slightly misty morning as the trees were starting to turn.
I didn’t have quite as much success with the comet as I’d have liked. Weather and childcare meant I only managed to get it over the Knavesmire instead of somewhere a little more recognisable before it became too faint to photograph against the city light pollution.
And finally, another couple of images from Dame Judy Dench walk, which leads into the centre of York from the North of the city, on the East side of the river. It’s one of the best spots to see the autumn colours from as it gets bathed in beautiful sunlight from its open aspect across the river pretty much all day long.
