Garden Photography
Yorkshire Garden Photographer
I am a published garden photographer working across Yorkshire and beyond. I photograph for garden designers looking to showcase their work, landscape architects, growers, design & build landscape companies and other makers and designers who work in the garden industry.
My editorial quality work focuses on distilling the elements of a successful garden, creating atmosphere while showing critical design elements such as sightlines and material palettes. I’m always working with the light and seasons to create publication-ready garden photography. Alongside working with garden designers I also enjoy using the garden as a beautiful backdrop for furniture or garden building shoots, creating high end imagery that really showcases products to their best.
Professional garden photography that captures structure, atmosphere, and the design intelligence behind exceptional outdoor spaces. I work with garden designers, landscape architects, and design studios to create powerful imagery that elevates portfolios, wins awards, and attracts high-value clients.

Your Questions, Answered
Everything you need to know about working with Alasdair McIntosh to photograph your garden or outdoor space.
Who is Alasdair McIntosh and what experience does he have in garden photography?
I'm a published garden photographer based in York with over 15 years' professional experience. I work across Yorkshire and the rest of the UK photographing gardens for designers, landscape architects, growers, design and build landscape companies, and other makers working in the garden industry. My work focuses on distilling the key elements of a successful garden, creating atmosphere while clearly showing the design intelligence, sightlines and material palettes that make a space exceptional.
Who do you work with?
I work primarily with garden designers and landscape architects who want to showcase their completed projects, as well as design and build landscape companies, growers, nurseries, and makers of garden furniture and buildings. I also photograph gardens for hospitality venues, public institutions such as the National Trust, developers and private homeowners.
What types of garden and outdoor space do you photograph?
I cover the full range of outdoor spaces including private residential gardens of all scales, show gardens, public realm landscapes, hotel and hospitality grounds, estate and heritage gardens, and commercial outdoor spaces. I also photograph gardens as backdrops for product shoots, creating high-end imagery that showcases garden furniture, buildings and outdoor products in a beautifully designed setting.
What is your approach to garden photography?
Good garden photography is always about working with light, season and the specific character of a space. I focus on capturing the design intelligence behind a garden, showing sightlines, structure and material palettes, as well as the atmosphere and planting detail that make it come alive. Light has a profound impact on how a garden looks and feels, so I plan carefully around the time of day and conditions that will show each space at its best.
When is the best time to photograph a garden?
It depends on the garden and what needs to be conveyed. Late spring through to early autumn tends to work well for most gardens as planting is at or near its peak. For the best light I typically prefer the hours around sunrise or in the evening before sunset, when the sun is low in the sky and the quality of light is at its most beautiful. Shooting at sunrise also has the practical advantage of quieter conditions in public or semi-public gardens. That said, each garden is different and I'll always discuss timing with you based on the specific project.
Do you style gardens before shooting?
Yes. Light styling and careful preparation are part of every shoot. A great eye for detail is essential in garden photography, and I'll always make small adjustments to ensure the space is presented at its very best for each composition. The level of styling tends to vary depending on the client and the purpose of the images.
Do you offer drone photography for gardens?
Yes, and it can be genuinely transformative for garden photography. Aerial images are particularly useful for conveying the overarching design of a garden, its layout, structure and relationship with the wider landscape or surrounding buildings, which can be very difficult to communicate from ground level alone. I used drone photography at the Hepworth Garden in Wakefield to capture Tom Stuart Smith's design from above in a way that simply wouldn't have been possible on foot. All drone work is fully insured and CAA-compliant.
Can images be used for award submissions and publications?
Yes, absolutely. I produce publication-ready garden photography that meets the standards required by garden design awards and horticultural and design press. If you have a specific award submission or publication deadline, please mention it when you get in touch so we can plan the shoot timing accordingly.
What areas do you cover?
I'm based in York and regularly work across Yorkshire and the North of England, including York, Leeds, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool and Hull. I also work nationally and internationally, so wherever your project is please do get in touch.
How long does a garden photoshoot take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the garden. Smaller private gardens might be covered in half a day, while larger estate gardens, public landscapes or projects with multiple distinct spaces would typically require a full day or more. For gardens where the quality of light at a particular time of day is critical, I may also factor in an early start or suggest revisiting at a different season. I'll give you a clear estimate once I understand the project.
When will I receive the finished images?
Fully edited, high-resolution images are typically delivered within 1 to 2 weeks via a private online gallery. If you have a deadline, expedited turnaround is available, so just let me know at the time of booking and I'll do my best to accommodate you. You'll receive web-optimised files for websites and digital portfolios, plus full-resolution versions for print, publications and award submissions.
How much does garden photography cost?
Pricing depends on the size and scope of the project, the location and whether drone photography is included. I'd rather give you an accurate quote based on your specific brief, so please get in touch and I'll put a proposal together for you.
How do I book a garden photoshoot?
Head to my contact page or drop me an email. I'll have a conversation about the project, the garden, what you're looking to achieve and the best time of year to shoot. For larger or more complex projects I'm also happy to visit in advance to plan everything properly.
