Landscape & Travel photography for lifestyle, amenities, location & area
Much of my work stems from my love of landscape photography. Being outdoors in all weather. Capturing fleeting moments of light that can completely transform a scene from uninteresting to something special for just a brief period of time. My work takes me all over the UK, from the city and seascapes of Yorkshire to the Northumberland coast and Scottish Highlands.
Cities
I generally prefer to photograph cities at dawn or late evening when they are quiet and traffic is generally easier to avoid.
Landscape
Rivers and Mountains have the strongest draw. With the right light and a carefully selected viewpoint, less dramatic landscapes can still delight.
Coast
Waves and tide endlessly fascinate. Quaint seaside villages or vast endless beaches both offer hours of possibility.
Your Questions, Answered
Everything you need to know about Alasdair McIntosh's landscape and travel photography, and how to commission location work.
Who is Alasdair McIntosh and what is his background in landscape and travel photography?
I'm a York-based photographer with over 15 years' professional experience, and landscape photography is at the very heart of why I picked up a camera in the first place. Scotland in particular is where I grew my love for landscape, and the West Coast remains my favourite place to photograph anywhere in the world. My work takes me all over the UK, from the city streets and seascapes of Yorkshire to the Northumberland coast, the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, always chasing those fleeting moments of light that can completely transform a scene.
What types of landscape and travel photography do you produce?
I cover a broad range of subjects. Mountains, moorland and highland landscapes, rivers, lochs and coastlines, quaint seaside villages and vast open beaches, and cities at dawn or dusk when the light is at its most interesting and the streets are at their most peaceful. I'm drawn particularly to the quality of light in the early morning and late evening, and I'm very comfortable working in challenging conditions, whether that's winter snow on the Isle of Skye, crashing coastal waves or early morning ice on mountain roads.
Do you take on commercial landscape and travel commissions?
Yes. Alongside my personal landscape work I take on commercial commissions for clients who need location and area photography to support their business. This includes holiday let owners wanting images of the surrounding landscape and local area, tourism and hospitality businesses needing imagery of their setting, and developers or architects wanting photographs that show a project within its wider landscape. If you have a commercial need for landscape or travel photography, please do get in touch.
What locations have you photographed?
My work has taken me across the UK and beyond. In Scotland I have photographed Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Eilean Donan Castle, and the Isle of Skye including the Old Man of Storr, Sligachan, Neist Point and the Fairy Pools. Closer to home I photograph extensively across Yorkshire, including the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, the coast and the city of York through all four seasons. I also photograph the Northumberland coast and travel further afield for the right projects.
What is your approach to landscape photography?
For me it is always about being in the right place at the right time. That means careful planning, checking forecasts, understanding how light moves across a location at different times of day and season, and being prepared to get up very early or wait patiently for conditions to change. The best light is often fleeting and can transform a completely ordinary scene into something remarkable for just a brief moment. I do the preparation needed to give myself the best chance of being there when that happens.
What time of day do you prefer to photograph?
It very much depends on the subject. For landscapes and coastlines I generally prefer the hours around sunrise and sunset when the sun is low and the light is at its warmest and most directional. For cities I prefer dawn or late evening when the streets are quiet and traffic is easier to avoid. That said, overcast and dramatic skies can produce excellent results too, and some of my favourite images have come from unpromising conditions.
Do you have a photo book available?
Yes. I have published a photo book called York: A Journey Through the Seasons, which showcases the city of York across all four seasons in photographs. It makes a beautiful gift and is available to purchase directly through my website.
Do you offer prints of your landscape photography?
If you are interested in purchasing prints of any of my landscape or travel images, please get in touch and I can discuss options with you.
Do you offer drone photography for landscape work?
Yes. Drone photography can add a genuinely different perspective to landscape and location work, particularly for showing the scale of a scene, the layout of a coastline or the relationship between a landmark and its surroundings. All drone work is fully insured and CAA-compliant.
Where are you based and how far do you travel?
I'm based in York and work across Yorkshire and the North of England as a matter of course. For landscape and travel work I regularly travel further afield across the UK, including Scotland, and am available for projects further afield still. If you have a location in mind, please get in touch and we can discuss.
How do I commission landscape or location photography?
Head to my contact page or drop me an email. I'll have a conversation about the project, the locations involved and what you're looking to achieve, and we can plan the shoot around the best conditions and time of year for the subject.
