The Aysgarth Falls Hotel is an eleven bedroomed country hotel with fine dining restaurant, pub and bar. Having recently undergone a full refurbishment by the Brook Group, they were looking for new photographs to show off their new spaces, rooms and food offering.

The food in the Palmers Restaurant was a delight.

This was an extremely varied one day shoot, where I worked around room availability, quiet periods in the bar and restaurant and of course the weather to get full coverage for use across their own website, marketing material and online booking platforms.

The restaurant was the most difficult room to shoot, being located on the North side of the hotel, with exceptional views out over the Yorkshire Dales. A North facing view is particularly challenging to photograph, particularly in the early spring when this shoot was, as the sun never makes it round onto the North side of the hotel, meaning you have to rely on significant additional lighting to balance the exposure and create an enticing, bright atmosphere. Shooting late on a summer’s evening would have wielded similar results but, not only would that have meant the restaurant would have had to have closed its doors for a night, the chances of timing that pre-scheduled shoot with good weather would also have been minimal. Also you would have to wait till summer, not ideal when you want to get marketing as soon as possible. It’s an important reason to work with a photographer with experience and skill in using additional lighting.

Most of the hotel rooms were also quite tricky spaces to photograph too, many had low sloped ceilings and as the hotel building dates from the mid 1700’s rooms were often unusually shaped. Again, the rooms on the North side of the hotel required significant additional lighting to balance to exposure and add depth & interest.

A very busy day all in, and a real reflection of the variety of subjects you can find yourself shooting in one hotel! Delightfully I photographed the food at the end of the day, and it tasted as good as it looks! Below is a selection of some of the photographs taken on the day.
